Flat roof lanterns have the potential to take the benefits and appeal of conventional roof windows to an entirely new level. Built with a beautiful angular configuration, flat roof lanterns bathe interiors in natural light while at the same time contributing to enhanced energy efficiency.

The installation of flat roof lanterns makes it possible to radically transform the visual appeal and comfort of your property at a comparatively affordable price. What’s more, the vast majority of flat roof lantern installations can go ahead without submitting a planning permission application.

At Asgard Roofing, we specialise in all aspects of flat roof lantern installations, repairs and maintenance for homes and businesses. If you’d like to learn more about the potential benefits of flat roof lanterns, contact a member of the team at Asgard today.

Do roof lanterns need planning permission?

In the vast majority of instances, flat roof lanterns do not need planning permission. However, there are exceptions that should be taken into account, which will be discussed during the initial inspection and assessment of your property.

For example, building regulations specify that roof lanterns are not allowed to protrude more than 150mm above the sloping pane of the existing roof.  In addition, they must be no higher than the highest part of the roof as a whole.

As it’s comparatively rare for any of the above to apply when installing roof lanterns, planning permission is almost never required. Nevertheless, we can help you determine whether or not you need to submit a planning permission application, so as to avoid potential costs and complications at a later date.

1
Do roof lanterns lose heat?

The question as to whether roof lanterns lose heat is essentially a question of quality. If you buy the lowest-quality roof lanterns on the market and install them incorrectly, they’ll have a negative impact on the thermal efficiency.  By contrast, the highest-quality roof lanterns on the market can have an overall U-value of just 0.7 W/m²K – exceptional thermal efficiency and reduced energy consumption as a result.

Manufactured and installed professionally, roof lanterns can actually increase the energy efficiency of a home or business. That’s why we strongly suggest sticking exclusively with established and reputable manufacturers you can trust, while insisting on the highest-quality installation services from a team of local experts.

Proudly serving homes and businesses across the region for more than 20 years, you can count on Asgard Roofing to get the job done at a price you can afford.

2
How much does it cost to fit a roof lantern?

Roof lantern costs vary significantly from one project to the next. The primary determining factor when calculating roof lantern installation costs is (of course) the size and configuration of the roof lantern. Decorative roof windows like these can be manufactured and installed in almost any shape and size required, with various optional extras available as preferred.

As a very rough estimate, the average price of installing a roof lantern right now in the UK is approximately £2,500. It’s a relatively extensive job that takes up to three days, during which we always work hard to minimise disruption for our customers.

In any case, it’s worth remembering that the added curb appeal and market value your home will benefit from could exceed the costs of your roof lantern by a significant margin.

3
Can you put a roof lantern on a pitched roof?

Roof lanterns are designed specifically for installation on flat roofs. If looking to install one or more windows in a pitched roof, we suggest considering alternative options. Even if it was technically possible to install a roof lantern in a roof on minor to moderate angle, it wouldn’t be the recommended approach.

The angular design of a roof lantern enables it to capture and distribute as much natural light as possible when fitted to a flat roof. The same effect would not be replicated if installed on a pitched roof, nor would the resulting installation be particularly safe. Therefore, anyone looking to enhance a pitched roof by installing one or more windows should consider more conventional options.

4
Can you put Velux windows in a flat roof?

Yes – Velux offers an extensive range of windows that are compatible with all types of flat and pitched roofs. Windows for flat roofs are most commonly referred to as skylights, though are nonetheless available in a limitless range of shapes, sizes and configurations.

From fixed skylights to opening skylights to curved skylights for improved rainwater disbursement, there’s no shortage of options to choose from.  However, it’s important to note that if the flat window you intend to install protrudes beyond the highest part of your existing roof, you may need to seek planning permission before getting started.

Contact a member of the team at Asgard Roofing if you have any questions on Velux roof windows for flat roofs.

So pleased to have Shane and Sean assist us with the revamping to the front of the house. Asgard roofing completed all the work efficiently and professionally, with the standard of work being exceptional. Even with tasks not usually associated with roofing, e.g. smooth coat rendering, porch floor tiling, and brickwork. Shane was able to carry these works out with little trouble and to a very high standard. A true pleasure to deal with and would highly recommend.read more

We engaged Asgard Roofing to initially identify a leak which we weren’t sure whether it was from the flat roof or hanging roof tiles. This identified that the hanging tiles were the issue so we asked Shane to replace these. This was all done on time , to budget , and in a very professional and tidy manner. We were really pleased with the work , and Shanes suggestion to add insulation behind the tiles at the same time.It was a pleasure to have them on site as they were friendly and helpful, we intend to use them again in the near future and our neighbours were so impressed that they have now asked for a quote as well. The attached pictures illustrate the improvement from the old tiles in both look , quality, and rain proofing. We have no hesitation in recommending Shane and Asgard Roofingread more
